What is the Planetary Health Diet?

This revolutionary diet approach is developed by leading nutritional and environmental scientists. It is based on their comprehensive review of the current evidence in order to meet healthy diet recommendations while being environmentally sustainable.

Food is the single strongest lever to optimize human health and environmental sustainability on Earth.

The report is written by the EAT-Lancet commission, formed of 37 leading scientists from 16 countries. They developed a diet which confers benefits to human health while protecting the environment from the harm caused by food production and processing.

The dietary model is aimed at everyone aged over 2 years (infants have different nutritional needs).

Which foods does it recommend?

Guess what? It’s plant based!

The planetary health plate shows us what the balance of our diet should look like. It describes a diet rich in vegetables, fruit, whole grains, plant protein sources and unsaturated plant oils. An optional addition is a modest amount of animal protein.

A diet rich in plant-based foods and with fewer animal source foods confers improved health and environmental benefits. Prof. Walter Willett MD, Harvard T.H Chan School of Public Health.

In this diet the vast majority of protein is recommended to come from legumes and nuts.

The plates below are examples of a planetary health diet shown in the official report. They showcase a flexitarian diet, which is largely plant-based.

We were inspired by these dishes to create our own ‘planetary health plate’ – check out our plant-based Buddha bowl here.
